Matanzas Creek Estate

Letter from the Winemaker

Hello Wine Club Members,

Spring is in full bloom at Matanzas Creek, and I’m so excited to share the wines in your May release! This season is all about fresh beginnings, and we have a lineup that perfectly captures the essence of spring—vibrant, celebratory, and full of life.

This shipment includes the fan-favorite Bennett Valley Chardonnay and the undeniably delicious Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine—traditional method bubbles tailor-made for spring celebrations and embracing the season’s longer, warmer days.

I’m also eager for you to try the newest vintage of the Journey Pinot Noir. Only our second vintage of this wine, it’s a true labor of love that is crafted with care and precision from vine to bottle. Rounding out the selection is the Jackson Park Merlot, a dark, opulent beauty sourced from its namesake vineyard on Taylor Mountain, with stunning views from Matanzas Creek Winery.

Thank you for supporting our vision and passion at Matanzas Creek. Open these bottles and celebrate life’s moments—big or small.

Cheers!

Marcia Torres Forno, Winemaker

2024 Bennett Valley Sauvignon Blanc

By merging traditional artistry with modern, sustainable practices, we aim to tell the story of each vineyard through its unique fruit. This Sauvignon Blanc is a testament to that mission, capturing the vibrant character and cooling influence of the Bennett Valley terroir in every glass.

Winemaking

Sourced from Clone 530 vines, this wine was aged for seven months in a combination of foudre, puncheons, and oak to highlight its distinctive minerality and savory profile.

Vintage Notes

The 2024 season was remarkably smooth and free of heat spikes, resulting in beautifully balanced fruit with above average acidity and exceptional clarity of flavor.

Wine Profile

Leading with crisp pear and white guava, the palate transitions from delicate notes of lemongrass to a dramatic burst of tropical fruit and green tea.

Matanzas Creek Brut Rosé

2016 Brut Rosé

This "méthode traditionnelle" sparkling wine is a testament to our ability to capture the vibrant character and cooling influence of our favorite cool-climate sites in every glass.

Winemaking

Crafted from early-picked Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this blend was aged on the lees for eight years to develop a refined delicacy and layered complexity.

Vintage Notes

The extended eight year tirage allowed this 2016 selection to harmonize, balancing its natural vibrant acidity with a sophisticated, creamy texture.

Wine Profile

This rose gold sparkling wine leads with aromas of brioche and white strawberry, unfolding into a palate of lemon ice cream, toasted walnut, and rhubarb.

2024 Bennett Valley Chardonnay

This Chardonnay represents the essence of our estate, offering an exceptional taste that embodies our dedication to the land and the craft.

Winemaking

Harvested by hand and whole-cluster pressed, this wine utilized native yeasts and partial malolactic fermentation in French oak to build body while preserving its vibrant natural acidity.

Vintage Notes

The 2024 vintage featured a unique timeline where slow native fermentations allowed the fruit from our estate blocks to develop a distinct character before bottling.

Wine Profile

This light to medium-bodied wine features crisp notes of golden apple and baked pear complemented by a clean minerality and hints of warm nutmeg.

Matanzas Creek Bennett Valley Chardonnay
Matanzas Creek Jackson Park merlot

2018 Jackson Park Merlot

This Merlot embodies our commitment to sustainability and quality, ensuring every bottle reflects the heart of Bennett Valley for a better tomorrow.

Winemaking

Reflecting a right bank style, this wine was aged for 600 days in French oak to build extraordinary depth and texture.

Vintage Notes

A long and cool 2018 growing season allowed for slow ripening, which preserved natural acidity while developing a high density of flavors.

Wine Profile

The palate opens with delicate notes of black mission fig and salted licorice before unfolding into a dramatic burst of tropical fruit and satsuma plum.

2022 Journey Pinot Noir

To craft a wine worthy of the Journey name, winemaker Marcia Torres Forno meticulously monitors every step of the process from vine to bottle. This Pinot Noir is the epitome of our craft and a showcase of what is possible within the unique microclimates of Sonoma County.

Winemaking

Following a four day cold soak and tank fermentation, this 100% destemmed wine was aged for 14 months in barrel and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Vintage Notes

Despite a challenging 2022 heat dome, robust vine canopies in the cool Bennett Valley protected the clusters to produce exceptional fruit with bold aromatics.

Wine Profile

This dry red offers a complex palate of blood orange, rhubarb, and Assam tea, balanced by vivid acidity and elongated tannins.
