The same attention to detail that sets Matanzas Creek wines apart from the competition has also been lovingly applied to the land itself – most notably in the 1991 planting of the spectacular lavender gardens that have since become the winery’s trademark and a draw for visitors the world over.
Planted to work with the natural aesthetic of the land, the lavender gardens are not only highly reflective of the passing seasons, but they’re also – much like grape vines – uniquely suited to the Matanzas Creek terroir due to the Estate’s climate, soil and exceptional drainage. Additionally, the lavender harvest fits beautifully into the winemaking cycle, as the flowers usually reach their zenith in June, well before the busy grape harvest.
As each lavender stem reaches full bloom, it is hand-cut for use in culinary, bath, body and home products. The whole of every plant is utilized, from the stalks, which produce grilling sticks to infuse lavender flavors into items such as poultry, lamb and vegetables, to the flowers and seeds, which are handcrafted on our estate into unique bath and spa products. Available only in the Matanzas Creek Tasting Room, on our website and in a few select California spa and boutique locations, these distinctive products are sought by consumers across the country, further adding to the Matanzas Creek mystique of beauty, fragrance and flavor that infuses everything we do.
