1999 Sonoma County Syrah

Tasting Notes
The wine is a deep, dark, purple color. The up-front smoky and meaty aromas also have hints of coffee, leather and peppery spiciness that are teamed with lush blueberry and wild cherry fruit notes. The concentrated aromas are reaffirmed with a fleshy texture touched with a smoky and white pepper finish. This wine is fullbodied and the 1999 Syrah’s well-structured tannins will insure productive aging over the next few years.

Source
With a winemaking tradition driven by research, experimentation and continual refinement, Matanzas Creek continues to create superb limited release wines. The 1999 Syrah is the winery’s third release of this classic Rhone varietal. The Syrah fruit source is exclusively Bennett Valley and 79% estate grown with the balance coming from the Nolan Vineyard a short two miles away. Bennett Valley’s rocky well-drained soils and long, cool growing season produces small berries of excellent quality. After crushing, the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks and spent a total of 14 days on the skins to extract color and flavor and complete malolactic fermentation. The wine was then transferred to French oak barrels for 10 months of aging.
