2002 Sonoma County Merlot

Tasting Notes

This wine begins with a rich, striking nose that brings to life the small percentage of Syrah added to the blend. Bennett Valley Merlot fruit prevails in the palette – bright, vibrant red raspberry fruit complemented by intense black cherry and blackberry fruit. Also evident are sweeter notes of red jam, anise and pomegranate. The Merlot fruit also possesses a slight hint of smoke, resulting from basalt, an ancient ocean floor rock found in Bennett Valley soil. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc fruit prevail in the finish providing structure as well as a hint of spice.

Comprised of over sixty percent Bennett Valley fruit, our 2002 Sonoma Valley Merlot exemplifies our commitment to Sonoma County's newest AVA and our dedication to the continued development of North America's finest Merlot vineyard – Jackson Park. This Merlot, the hallmark of the Estate's wine portfolio, represents a refined style of winegrowing and winemaking. This vintage clearly reflects the knowledge and experience of our Winemaker, Francois Cordesse, and Vineyard Manager, Brandon Axell. Francois and Brandon leverage Bennett Valley's cool growing climate and longer growing season to craft concentrated, impeccably balanced wines.

This Merlot is the first Matanzas Creek wine to boast our new, enhanced package. The refined design and color palette of this package better represent the elegance and sophistication of the Estate, while respecting the equity of a package regarded as a true classic.
